I keep forgetting to recommend this book, but Adele Reinhartz has written an excellent book on a Jewish response to the Gospel of John --
Befriending the Beloved Disciple: A Jewish Reading of the Gospel of John. Using the techniques of reader-response theory, she sketches out four possible Jewish responses to John -- a compliant reading, a resistant reading, a sympathetic reading, and an engaged reading. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in a more indepth grappling with the issues of Christian anti-Judaism and Jewish responses to it than the discussion arising from Mel Gibson's movie,
The Passion.
